V-configuration engines were designed because they are compact and can be light weight. A inline 6 cylinder for instance requires more room because of its length; a V6 can be shorter and therefor lighter, more compact and more powerful. V engines also allow cylinders to be close together so they can share rod journals which also saves weight.I hope this helps you.
