What are the platypus' relative? |
[Edit] |
[Edit]
The platypus belongs to the order monotremata, as does the spiny anteater which is it's only living close relative.
Since the platypus have similar features with both birds, reptiles and mammals, they are hard to classify, and are actually the oldest living mammal. They are not, however, ancestors of more advanced mammals, but rather an early offshoot that developed along variant lines in long isolation.
