Is it possible to connect a laptop's sound to the radio speakers?

[Edit]

Answer

i hook my laptop up to my stereo. you just need a cord that goes into the headphone plug on the laptop and to an input (rca or auxilary input) on your radio. if you try hooking just to speakers the its not going to be loud, you really need som sort of amplifier (powered speakers are awesome for this because the are pretty portable depending on the model) wal mart even has some pretty good and inexpensive models. ive got logitech z5300, not portable but powerfull! i use it for home surround too.

Answer

this only works if your radio has an auxiliary input most factory radios need adapters to allow for a aux input. Also external aftermarket amplifiers would work but controling the volume may be difficult depending on the amp.

Answer

There are $20 devices from electronics stores (Best Buy, Circuit City,...) that you plug into your headphone jack on the laptop and they convert the sound to a radio signal that your radio can pick up on certain frequencies. Very user-friendly and easy to do.

Answer

absolutevely right, they're called wireless fm transmitters, and they're really cheap!

Answer

One problem with the wireless transmitters is that they don't send a very high quality signal to the computer. Unless you buy a high end transmitter only expect mediocre sound!

Answer

You could parallel the input signal of the radio. if you parallel the tuner, it will play the radio staions, and the laptop. i suggest that you also add a switch to the input signal phase of the tuner. This way you could single out the laptops signal. if you wish to parallel, you need to splice the end off a stereo 1/8inch headphone cable. then solder the ends mimicking the tuner input. Best use tester clips from radio shack or mouser.com before making anything permanent, or oyu could just leave the clips attached. WARNING, you may,and probably, be shocked to death if not unplugged. This will void any and all warranties on the radio device, but not the laptop.

Answer

I've been researching the same issue. I want to play my iTunes library on all stereo's in my home from a single PC. a couple of options I have found are media servers, that use standard 802.11 wireless from PC to stereo then convert back to audio for input to stereo, some even integrate to iTunes or other media player software. Problems with most of these solutions is that few allow you to broadcast the same song in unison to multiple stereos and also $$$$$. The ones that do allow broadcast are very pricey.

Another alternative is a better quality FM transmitter. I have used the small ones discussed here and agree the low power leads to poor quality signal. Some are not even stereo xmitters. But cost is low and set up easy.

I am opting for a bootleg FM xmitter (FCC requires lower that I think 1/4 Watt) they are readily available in the 1 - 4 Watt range to insure good coverage throughout the house and a good quality stereo signal. Cost varies around $200.00. Check e-bay.

Question

I just found this: http://www.mobileblackbox.com/ after a google search. However, upon looking at the spec it is 200mW (1/5 Watt). However, they claim to have 450 feet range and it does look quite "industrial". Does anybody have any experiences of this?
