In what period did mammals develop?

[Edit]

Answer

Mammals were around when the dinosaurs were still succesful, they were small and nocturnal burrowers mainly. They probably evolved from the burrowing, mouse like, "mammal like reptiles" during the Permian period. When the mass exctinction happened 65mya (million years ago), the small mammals had a chance to take over.
