How was oil and gas made in ancient times?

[Edit]

Answer

It was not made. They did not use gas or oil back then. Oil which seeped out at the surface ( more like tar as the gas and lighter part would dissipate into the atmosphere) was used.

Answer

Crude oil, natural gas, and coal are made when biological material (usually algae) is buried beneath the surface of the earth and slowly cooked under the pressure of the earth above. This process can be observed today at the bottom of the oceans where algae flourish.

If you are referring to how it was used - then it was a rare commodity, but the Chinese used it for heating, and the Zoroastrians believed it to be a way of communing with spirits; that is when natural gas seeped from the earth and caught fire. Spirits were said to be whispering in the flames.
