According to books.nap.edu the average female should consume between 180 and 230 grams and the average male should consume between 200 and 330 grams to meet the average demand for energy needs while consuming acceptable levels of fat and protein.

WWW.nap.edu lists the Dietary Reference charts and shows 130 grams as the Recommended Daily Allowance in order to decrease the risk of chronic disease. This level, 130 grams, was listed at the previously mentioned website as necessary, the absolute daily MINIMUM to meet brain requirements daily since your brain is the only organ of your body which is carbohydrate dependent - It must get daily carbs to run properly!!

This is entirely dependent on the individual. The amount of healthy carbohydrate intake from one individual to another varies enormously; some people need very few carbohydrates (25% of their calories) to a majority from carbohydrates (70% of calories). If you feel sleepy after a meal or find that you are always hungry you may benefit by eating fewer carbs. If you find that your stomach feels uncomfortably "heavy" after a meal then you may benefit by lowering fat intake and increasing carbs.

Carbohydrates are increasingly important for exercise; this does not mean that everyone who runs or lifts weights needs tons of carbohydrates! As I said, it is dependent on the individual. An insulin spike can be beneficial right before exercise, and carbohydrates can be used after exercise to replace lost glycogen stores.
