Are pure substances and mixtures opposites?

[Edit]
Perhaps and perhaps not. A pure substance is just that. Break it down as finely as you like and you still have "that stuff" you started with, except a smaller amount. A mixture is different in that it is a combination of two or more things. A chemical compound is probably the opposite of a pure substance because it is composed of two or more elements (pure substances). These two (or more) substances cannot be separated except by chemical means; there is no mechanical way to separate chemical compounds.
